Nickel Creek Unveils New Album, Spring Concert Tour

It’s a good day for Nickel Creek fans, as the band announced that they’re reuniting after a lengthy hiatus, with a new album and tour in the works.

“WE’RE (as they say) GETTING THE BAND BACK TOGETHER, Y’ALL!!! A record, a tour…” Band member Chris Thile wrote in a tweet that was retweeted yesterday by Nickel Creek’s new Twitter account.

Thile and siblings Sean and Sara Watkins announced in 2007 that the members wanted to put the band on hold to work on individual projects after seven straight years of touring and releasing three studio albums.

Yesterday, the trio revealed that they’ve been working on their first LP since 2005’s Why Should The Fire Die?

“We are delighted and SO excited to announce that, after nine years, Nickel Creek is releasing a new album!” the band posted on Facebook. “We’re really happy with the music and can’t wait for you to hear it.

“There will also be a limited Nickel Creek tour this spring, as well as some festival dates this summer.”

The tour is only a little one thus far, kicking off on April 18th in Nashville, and making stops in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C, Chicago, Oakland, California, and wrapping up in Telluride, Colorado on June 21st for the Telluride Bluegrass festival.

During the band’s hiatus, all three members have worked on individual projects. Thile has released three albums and an EP with his band Punch Brothers, with whom he also was featured on the soundtrack for Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Inside Llewyn Davis”; a set of interpretations of bluegrass classics with guitarist Michael Daves, Sleep With One Eye Open, a solo record called Bach Partitas and Sonatas, Vol.1, a series of duets with Edgar Meyer and the Grammy-winning Goat Rodeo Sessions album with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Stuart Duncan, and Meyer.

Sara Watkins and her brother Sean have, meanwhile, held an informal residency at the LA club Largo, while Sara has also released a self-titled solo album, and toured as a guest fiddle player/vocalist with the Decemberists.
