Weird Al Yankovic, the American singer-songwriter and parodist, was born on October 23, 1959 in Downey, California. He is renowned for humorous songs which parody popular culture in general and often specific songs from contemporary musical acts. Yankovic has sold over 12 million albums since 1976. He has recorded over 150 original songs and parodies and performed over 1,000 live shows. Yankovic has been nominated for nine Grammy Awards and won three. He has six platinum and four gold records. After an almost three decade career, in 2006 Yankovic had his first top ten song (“White & Nerdy”) as well as his first top 10 ten album on the Billboard 200 chart (Straight Outta Lynwood).
Much of Yankovic’s success derives from his effective music videos which he uses to parody popular culture along with original music videos and original songs. He has also starred in The Weird Al Show and the movie UHF. Yanokvic has also also appeared on numerous television programs as well as MTV Al TV specials.
In 1979, Yankovic released “My Bologna,” his first single. “Another One Rides the Bus,” his second single, peaked in the No. 4 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In 1983, he released his debut self-titled album. It peaked in the No. 16 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart. The third single off the album “Ricky” peaked in the No. 64 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In 1984, he released his second album, Weird Al Yankovic in 3D. It peaked in the No. 17 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart. “Eat It,” the lead single, peaked in the No. 12 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. In 1985, Yankovic released his third album, Dare to Be Stupid. It peaked in the No. 17 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart, spawning six singles that included “Like a Surgeon.” Yankovic’s tenth studio album, Straight Outta Lynwood, peaked in the No. 10 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart and spawned the No. 9 hit song “White & Nerdy.” In 2011, Yankovic released his thirteen and most recent album, Alpocalypse.
