Florence and the Machine, comprised of Florence Welch and various other artists providing backing music, perform and record music that combines various genres, including soul and rock. The music of the band has been highly praised by the music media, particularly the BBC, even before the group achieved mainstream success. The rise to prominence of Florence and the Machine was helped with the BBC promoting her on their BBC Introducing program.
The backing band of Welch’s is referred to as The Machine. It is mainly comprised of session musicians and varies depending on the requirements of Welch when she is performing. However, the name originally arose from Welch’s collaborations as a teenager with her friend Isabella Machine Summers. The two performed as Florence Robot/Isa Machine. It was shortened later into Florence and the Machine.
In July 2009, Lungs, the debut album for Florence and the Machine, was released. For the first five weeks after its release, the set was No. 1 on the UK Albums chart.
