The American pop musician Katy Perry was born as Katheryn Hudson on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents were Christian pastors and she grew up listening only to gospel music. As a child she sang at her local church. During her high school freshman year Perry earned her GED and began pursuing a music career. In 2001, she released a gospel album titled Katy Hudson, Her record label closed and the album was considered unsuccessful. Later she record an album with The Matrix, a production team, and from 2004-2005 worked on a solo album. However neither of the albums were released.
In 2007, Perry signed with the record label Capitol Music Group, her fourth in seven years. She adopted Katy Perry as her stage name and released “Ur So Gay” her first single on the Internet, in November. The track gained public attention but didn’t chart. In 2008 she released “I Kissed a Girl,” her second single. The track saw Perry rise to fame and topped the international music charts. “One of the Boys,” the first mainstream album from Perry, was released in 2008. The RIIA certified the album as platinum. “Hot n Cold” and “I Kissed a Girl” both were certified as multi-platinum. Perry released “Teenage Dream,” in August 2010. Her second album debuted in the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s 200 chart and spawned the hit singles “Firework,” “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.” All three singles topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Perry was a guest judge for “The X Factor,” the British tv show. She also released the fragrance “Purr.” She will appear in “The Smurfs,” a film scheduled for release in 2011. In October 2010, Perry married Russell Brand.
