Nick Cave, the Australian songwriter, musician, composer, screenwriter, author and actor, was born on September 22, 1957 in Warracknabeal, Victoria. Cave is most known as the frontman of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a highly acclaimed rock band formed in 1983. The band was renowned for its unique musical styles and eclectic influences. During the early 1980s, Cave was the frontman for a band called The Birthday Party. The group was known for their violent sound and challenging and gothic lyrics. Cave formed Grinderman, a garage rock band, in 2006. In 2007, they released their debut album. The music of Nick Cave is known for its lyrical obsessions with violence, love, death and religion, eclectic influences and emotional intensity.
Cave met Chris Coyne (saxophonist), Brett Purcell (bass), John Cochivera (guitar), Phil Calvert (drums) and Mick Harvey (guitar) in 1973 while they were all Caulfield Grammar students. They formed the group that was later known as The Birthday Party. Cave was the singer. During the late 1970s, the band helped to led the post-punk scene in Melbourne. They moved to London in 1980 and later to West Berlin. In 1984, the group disbanded.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was established in 1984. The alternative rock band has released fifteen albums, with Cave serving as their frontman and leader. They released Push the Sky Away, their most recent album, in February 2013. The band has an eclectic sound, having been influenced by a wide range of musical genres, including blues, no wave, gothic rock and punk rock.
Cave established the alternative rock group Grinderman in 2006. Cave is the vocalist and performed on piano, organ and guitar. Other members included Warren Ellis (backing vocals, viola, violin, electric mandolin, tenor guitar), Martyn Casey (backing vocals, bass guitar) and Jim Sclavunos (backing vocals, percussion, drums). In 2007, the band released their debut self-titled album, followed by Grinderman 2 in 2010. The group disbanded in 2011. Since the 1990s, Cave has also performed as a solo artist performing the vocals and on piano, with Warren Ellis playing accordion and violin.
